Feelings
of anxiety come from apprehension or fear, the source of which is not
always recognisable.
Anxiety, apprehension or worry is usually accompanied by some physical
sensations, your heart pounding, your breathing increasing, becoming
tighter, shallower, or even faster, your hands might shake or perhaps
the palms start sweating. The more severe the symptoms the more likely
it is to experience panic attacks.
These symptoms are the body's fight or flight mechanism which was designed
to protect you.
Over time, your anxiety or occurrence of panic attacks may develop to
the point where it can have a significant impact on your life. It is
quite common in these circumstances to gradually limit or attempt to
control your lifestyle so as to always be able to avoid potential situations
which might trigger your anxiety or another panic attack.
It is important to understand that your thoughts actually activate the
fight or flight response, whatever you think becomes your mind's reality,
each time the thought triggers the fight or flight response in a situation
that it is not required, you experience the symptoms of anxiety, and
this then becomes a learned and automated response. You have simply
programmed yourself to feel anxious without realising and now you feel
out of control.
